A one-time treatrical event in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, "Roots of Liberty" tells the story of Cecile, a Haitian-American high school student who is assigned to write a paper on someone who helped pave the way to the Emancipation Proclamation. When she chooses Toussaint Louverture, the leader of the Haitian Revolution and an inspiration for the antislavery movement in the United States, Cecile’s teacher informs her she cannot write about him because he is "not in the textbook".

Haitian-born director and former Minister of Culture Raoul Peck’s newest film is an indictment of Western aid to Haiti. After the massive earthquake that struck in January 2010, killing an estimated 250,000 and leaving 1.2 million homeless, a flood of aid and agencies arrived at Haiti’s door. Some had an agenda to help, others had an agenda to protect their own assets and interests. Three years later, what state has this aid left the Haitian people in?

Haiti Film Fest 2013 will include the opening night celebration, an emerging filmmakers event and two full days of free films from contemporary Haitian filmmakers, films about Haiti’s Diaspora, as well as films from the beginning of Haiti’s presence on-screen. Ranging from seasoned directors to emerging student filmmakers, this film festival will present the diverse points of view that encompass the Haitian identity.
